Superhero fatigue is real. With both DC and Marvel churning out new releases, each franchise adding layers upon layers of plot and new characters, it's no wonder fans are getting exhausted. Back when Marvel first released the Iron Man movies, teasing at some bigger story, the entire enterprise was unprecedented and exciting. Now the MCU is clocking in at well over a decade, and studios have to continue pushing the limits of the genre they've worked to legitimize.
For Marvel, Secret Invasion is one such attempt to build out the MCU franchise. You won't see any goody-two-shoes heroes flying with capes here. Instead, the show focuses on Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury, the no-nonsense S.H.I.E.L.D. agent with a direct line to the Avengers. Except he's determined to take on Earth's newest threat alone.
Secret Invasion follows Fury as he tries to stop a group of rebellious Skrulls. As a reminder, the Skrulls are the alien race we first met in Captain Marvel who needed a place for refuge after their home was engulfed in war. Fury and Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) promised to help the Skrulls find a place to live, while in the meantime a ship's worth of them assimilated on Earth. But Fury's close friend Talos (Ben Mendelsohn), one of the Skrulls he met back in Captain Marvel, actually let all the Skrulls onto the planet. And as they're shapeshifters, there's no telling who's a Skrull and who's not—a moment late in the first Secret Invasion episode even reveals that there are around 100 undercover Skrulls who've infiltrated official government ranks. For Fury to find Skrulls intent on hurting humans, he'll have to do some serious investigating.

Secret Invasion, like Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, and most of the other MCU Disney+ series before it, will run for six episodes. That means there are three episodes of Secret Invasion—and five weeks of Skrull espionage mystery—left in the series.
