Country musician Shay Mooney just started 2023 by taking stock of his weight loss journey, sharing a shirtless side-by-side photo on Instagram which revealed the dramatic difference in his physique.

"Consistency," he wrote. "I changed my entire world in 6 months. No gimmicks or fads. Just consistency. If that tired guy on the left can do it so can you." He also shared the image to his Instagram Story, with a caption that implies he's not done pursuing his fitness goals: "Ain't as good as I'm gonna get, but I'm better than I used to be."

Mooney, who performs as one half of the duo Dan + Shay alongside Dan Smyers, publicly committed to improving his health and fitness over the latter half of 2022, and lost more than 50 pounds in a five-month period.

"I had this moment where I was just not feeling healthy," he told the Today Show in November 2022. "It wasn't necessarily for my appearance, but it was to feel healthy, and I'm down about 53 or 54 pounds." The musician said he has never felt better "physically, mentally, and spiritually," which he credits with taking up weight training, walking seven miles every day, not drinking alcohol, and "eating clean."

"It's weird not recognizing yourself. I got to a place mentally and physically that I will never go again," Mooney wrote in December, in an Instagram post reflecting on the changes he made in 2022. "It matters what we eat. It matters who you spend your time with. It matters what you choose to spend your time on. I'm so thankful for the people in my life that helped me make a change. No one forced me into this. I wanted to change my life for me. I’ve never felt more alive. I’m not looking for mediocrity…let’s go find greatness."
